What is a neck lift?
A neck lift (platysmaplasty / cervicoplasty) addresses sagging neck skin, bands of platysma muscle (“turkey neck”), and jowling that develops with ageing. It produces a clean, defined jawline and a smoother neck contour — often described as the most ageing-revealing area of the face.
Neck lift surgery can be performed alone or combined with a facelift for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. At Soulplace Surgery, the approach is individualised, using the minimal effective incision to achieve a natural, refreshed result without a “operated” look.
A neck lift addresses the specific signs of ageing that appear on the neck and lower jawline: loose, sagging skin; excess submental fat ('double chin'); prominent vertical neck bands (platysmal bands); and jowling at the jaw. These changes can make the face look significantly older than patients feel, and no non-surgical treatment delivers the same degree of correction that surgery achieves.
The procedure can be performed as a standalone operation or combined with a facelift for comprehensive lower facial rejuvenation — a combination that Dr. Gana frequently recommends when jowling is significant. Incisions are placed under the chin and in the natural contour behind the ears, healing to fine lines that are easily concealed by hair and inconspicuous at rest.
Recovery from a neck lift is generally manageable and straightforward. Bruising and swelling are most visible in the first week and resolve significantly by 2–3 weeks. Most patients return to social situations at 3–4 weeks. Results are long-lasting — the procedure significantly resets the appearance of the neck and jawline for many years.

Is it right for you?
Likely a good fit if
- You have loose, sagging skin and visible neck bands (platysmal laxity)
- You have excess submental fat that diet and exercise have not resolved
- You are in good general health and at a stable weight
- You have realistic expectations about improving neck contour
- You are a non-smoker or able to stop 6 weeks before and after surgery
Not the right time if
- Active or recent smoker
- Significant uncontrolled health conditions
- Lower face laxity requiring a full facelift instead
- Expecting large-volume neck contouring (liposuction may be more appropriate)
- Unrealistic expectations about longevity of results
Your surgeon confirms suitability in person after an examination and pre-operative assessment.
What to expect
-
01 Bandage & Rest Days 1-7
A chin strap or bandage is worn for several days. Swelling and bruising around the neck and jaw are expected and normal.
-
02 Swelling Easing Weeks 1-2
The majority of swelling and bruising reduces by the end of week two. Most patients feel comfortable in public by this point.
-
03 Returning to Routine Weeks 2-4
Light work and most daily activities resume. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and direct sun exposure to the neck.
-
04 Refined Result Months 2-6
Tightness and minor numbness resolve progressively. Scars are hidden behind the ears and under the chin; they fade over 12 months.

Risks & safety
Neck lift risks include temporary numbness, haematoma, scarring, skin irregularity, asymmetry, and injury to underlying structures. These are rare when surgery is performed by an experienced surgeon in an appropriate facility.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a neck lift and a facelift?
A neck lift focuses specifically on the neck and lower jawline. A facelift addresses the mid and lower face as well. Many patients have both performed together for a comprehensive lower facial rejuvenation. Your surgeon will recommend the right scope.
Will there be visible scars after a neck lift?
Incisions are placed under the chin and behind the ears, within the natural contours of the face and head. They are generally well concealed and fade to fine, pale lines within 6–12 months.
Is a neck lift alone enough, or do I need a facelift too?
This depends on where you are seeing the most visible change. If jowling and mid-face sagging are significant, a facelift may be recommended alongside the neck lift. If the concern is predominantly the neck and chin, a neck lift alone may deliver excellent results.
How long does a neck lift last?
Results typically last 5–10 years. The procedure significantly resets the clock on neck and jawline laxity. Many patients remain very happy with their result for a decade or more with a healthy lifestyle.
Can a neck lift be combined with other procedures?
Yes. A neck lift is frequently combined with a facelift, liposuction of the chin, or blepharoplasty for a comprehensive facial rejuvenation plan. Your surgeon will advise what combinations are safe and effective.
