What is a blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) rejuvenates the upper and lower eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle, and fat that accumulates with age. Drooping upper lids and puffy lower-lid bags are common concerns that make the face appear older or more tired than you feel.

Upper blepharoplasty can also have functional benefits, restoring peripheral vision when heavy upper-lid skin obstructs the visual field. At Soulplace Surgery, eyelid surgery is tailored to your ethnic features and aesthetic goals for a refreshed, naturally youthful appearance.

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) rejuvenates the upper and/or lower eyelids by removing the excess skin, fat, and muscle that accumulates with age. Heavy upper eyelids give a tired, aged appearance and — when significant — can encroach on the upper visual field, making the procedure both cosmetically and functionally important. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty addresses bags and hollows beneath the eye for a more rested, youthful look.

Upper and lower blepharoplasty can be performed independently or together in the same session. Upper eyelid incisions are placed within the natural crease and are essentially invisible when the eye is open. Lower eyelid work is approached through an incision just below the lash line or, where only fat redistribution is needed, from inside the lower lid (transconjunctival approach) — leaving no external scar at all.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, takes 1–2 hours, and is a day-case procedure. Bruising resolves within 10–14 days and most patients feel comfortable in public within 2 weeks. Results are immediate and long-lasting — upper eyelid surgery typically endures 5–10 years before any touch-up might be considered.

Is it right for you?

Likely a good fit if

  • You have excess upper eyelid skin that impairs vision or creates a heavy appearance
  • You have persistent puffiness or under-eye bags making you look fatigued
  • You are in good general health with no uncontrolled eye conditions
  • You have realistic expectations about eyelid refinement
  • You are a non-smoker or willing to stop for 6 weeks before and after surgery

Not the right time if

  • Active or recent smoker
  • Uncontrolled dry eye or thyroid eye disease
  • Significant uncontrolled health conditions
  • Drooping driven by brow descent (brow lift may be needed first)
  • Unrealistic expectations about scar invisibility

Your surgeon confirms suitability in person after an examination and pre-operative assessment.

What to expect

  1. 01 Swelling & Bruising Days 1-5

Significant swelling and bruising around the eyes is normal. Use cold compresses, sleep with head elevated, and rest fully.

  2. 02 Sutures Removed Days 5-10

Sutures are removed at around day five to seven. Swelling reduces noticeably; many patients feel comfortable in public by week two.

  3. 03 Returning to Routine Weeks 2-4

Most patients return to work in week one to two. Avoid eye strain, contact lenses, and sun exposure to the eyelid area.

  4. 04 Final Result Months 2-6

Eyelid scars are typically hidden in natural creases and fade significantly. Final appearance is clear from around three months.

Risks & safety

Blepharoplasty is a low-risk procedure. Potential complications include dry eyes, asymmetry, scarring, temporary blurred vision, and very rarely ectropion (lower lid drooping). All risks are discussed at your consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Will there be visible scars after blepharoplasty?

Upper eyelid incisions are placed within the natural crease and are essentially invisible when the eye is open. Lower eyelid incisions are placed just below the lash line or inside the eyelid. Scars are rarely visible after full healing.

Can blepharoplasty improve my vision?

Yes. When excess upper eyelid skin significantly droops over the pupil, surgical removal can meaningfully improve the visual field. In such cases the procedure may be considered medically necessary and partly covered by insurance.

How long do the results of eyelid surgery last?

Upper eyelid surgery results typically last 5–10 years. Lower eyelid surgery is more dependent on individual anatomy but generally lasts a similar length of time. Natural ageing continues after surgery.

Can blepharoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Blepharoplasty is commonly combined with a facelift, brow lift, or laser resurfacing for comprehensive facial rejuvenation in a single session.

Is blepharoplasty painful?

The eyes are numbed with local anaesthesia and discomfort is minimal. After surgery, most patients describe eye tightness, mild soreness, and light sensitivity rather than pain. This resolves quickly within the first week.
