Heart Disease

About This Condition

Our Treatment Approach

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide and a growing health challenge in Nigeria and West Africa, driven by rising rates of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and physical inactivity.

At Soul Place Surgery Family Medicine, we provide evidence-based cardiovascular assessment and long-term management combining risk factor identification, lifestyle intervention, pharmacological management, and referral to specialist cardiology where required.

Common Symptoms

  • Chest pain or tightness, especially on exertion
  • Shortness of breath at rest or during light activity
  • Palpitations or irregular heartbeat
  • Swelling in the legs or ankles
  • Fatigue disproportionate to activity level
  • Dizziness or near-fainting
  • Persistent high blood pressure

Management is guided by the specific cardiac condition identified. For coronary artery disease and hypertensive heart disease, we focus on blood pressure control, lipid optimisation, antiplatelet therapy where indicated, smoking cessation, dietary modification, and structured exercise programming.

For patients with known arrhythmias, heart failure, or valvular disease, we coordinate care with cardiologists and provide monitoring for medication titration.

When To See Us

A structured review of your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, lifestyle, and family history to estimate your 10-year risk of heart attack or stroke and guide preventive treatment.

Can heart disease be prevented?

Many forms of cardiovascular disease are preventable through blood pressure control, dietary improvement, weight management, exercise, and smoking cessation.
