About This Condition

Our Treatment Approach

Obesity is a chronic condition with far-reaching health consequences including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, obstructive sleep apnoea, joint disease, and certain cancers. In Nigeria, urbanisation and dietary change have contributed to a rapid rise in obesity prevalence.

At Soul Place Surgery, obesity is managed as a medical condition. Our family medicine physicians work with each patient to identify underlying drivers, assess comorbidities, and design a structured, sustainable management plan. For patients with severe obesity or weight-related complications who have not responded to lifestyle and medical intervention, bariatric surgery is coordinated with our surgical team.

Common Symptoms

  • BMI of 30 or above
  • Excess abdominal fat distribution
  • Shortness of breath on exertion
  • Joint pain in weight-bearing joints
  • Fatigue and reduced exercise tolerance
  • Snoring or sleep apnoea
  • Elevated blood pressure, blood glucose, or cholesterol

Management begins with a full medical assessment to identify contributing factors and comorbidities. The core treatment plan includes personalised dietary guidance, structured physical activity programming, and behavioural change support. Pharmacotherapy is considered for eligible patients.

Patients with BMI above 35 with comorbidities, or above 40, who have not achieved sustained weight loss are discussed for bariatric surgery referral.
