Breast reconstruction rebuilds the breast mound following mastectomy or lumpectomy for breast cancer, congenital absence, or traumatic loss. Reconstruction can be implant-based, autologous (using your own tissue), or a combination of both.

Recovery
Pain is managed in hospital. Drains monitor fluid; arm movement is restricted while wounds begin to heal.
Swelling and bruising reduce. Gentle movement is reintroduced carefully. Follow all wound care and positioning instructions.
Light daily activities and short walks are encouraged. Strenuous activity remains restricted pending surgeon review.
The reconstructed breast settles and feels more natural. Further refinement procedures can be discussed at follow-up.

Reconstruction risks include implant-related complications, flap loss, infection, scarring, and asymmetry. The choice of technique and timing is carefully weighed against your overall health status and cancer treatment plan.

Reconstruction can be performed at the same time as mastectomy (immediate) or after cancer treatment is fully completed (delayed). The best timing depends on your cancer treatment plan and personal priorities. Both approaches deliver excellent outcomes.
Implant-based reconstruction uses silicone or saline implants to rebuild the breast mound. Flap reconstruction uses your own tissue from the back, abdomen, or thighs and generally produces a more natural feel — but involves longer surgery and recovery.
The reconstructed breast will look and feel close to natural, though sensation in the skin may differ from the original breast. Most patients report that the psychological and aesthetic benefits far outweigh this difference.
Yes. Nipple and areola reconstruction is typically a secondary stage performed 3–6 months after the breast mound is fully healed. 3D tattooing is also an option and produces very natural-looking results.
A reconstructed breast requires different imaging techniques, but reconstruction does not prevent cancer surveillance. Your oncologist will advise on ongoing monitoring protocols after reconstruction.
